KIT208 ASSIGNMENT 2 REPORT

1.    Introduction

ChildNet a software to support learning and researching about planets for children. By applying AR technology, the software can help learners have a more intuitive view of the planets, thereby increasing their interest and learning productivity.

2.    Description of the application

As mentioned above, ChildNet is a planetary learning aid for children. By scanning the cards of the planet they want to see through the camera, children can see its simulations in real life and can perform actions such as rotate or display detailed information about the planet.

The significance of ChildNet in the context of education is it will help to solve the most common problem that children often encounter when learning which is the visual aids. For children, memorizing through pictures is always easier than just learning theory, so ChildNet has used 3D models of planets, thereby helping them learn in an effective way. In addition, the software will be slightly game-oriented, so children will feel more interested than just reading books as usual.

Coming to interface technology, ChildNet uses AR to be able to add a model of each planet based on the image of that planet. Using AR makes it possible for users to do seemingly impossible things like see or rotate planets with just a camera and a card. In addition, AR also brings a whole new experience to children's learning, thereby increasing their desire to learn.

3.    Interaction Design

Because this is a learning support software, so interactions are indispensable. Being able to perform interactions with the application will increase the ability to absorb as well as the excitement of learning. With users being children, interactions must be designed to be eye-catching and to be easily implemented. So ChildNet designed all the buttons to be virtual buttons with the names of each action on those buttons that children will see after scanning the image of the planet. By designing interactions that way, the application will bring a very special experience to children as well as creating the necessary excitement, which is the strongest point of AR technology.

In order to be suitable for observing and understanding more about planets, ChildNet currently has 2 interactions: Rotating and Showing Information. As their name suggests, rotating allows the user to 3D rotate the model for a closer look, while showing information gives the user more information about the planet being observed. In addition, other interactions such as zooming or coloring model will also be very interesting interactions and will be developed in the shortest time.

4.    Technical Development

ChildNet is developed using Unity with the use of Vuforia AR.

ChildNet currently has 2 main interactions, which is to rotate the 3D Model and display additional information about the planet being viewed. Both of these interactions are designed in the form of virtual buttons, which means that users only need to put their hands over the buttons to be able to perform the action they want.

5.    3D Models

For now, only one 3D model has been completed in ChildNet which is the earth model. The use of this model is as obvious as its name, which is to simulate the earth. Using this model makes it possible for the user to see the whole earth, as well as be able to perform interactions with it to bring more understanding about the earth.
